Met de brand in de bus van sauna Diana is met kerst een stukje wielerhistorie verloren gegaan. Woensdrechtenaar Kees Kuijlen zamelt nu geld in voor het herstel van de bus. Met succes. Hij krijgt reacties en donaties uit binnen- en buitenland.

De deels afgebrande dubbeldekkerbus van Sauna Diana staat er verlaten bij op een industrieterrein bij Breda. De iconische bus met een rijke wielergeschiedenis, vatte op Eerste kerstdag vlam. “Ze hebben hem in brand gestoken, dat kan haast niet anders”, zegt Kees Kuijlen. Hij gelooft niet dat het een ongeluk of toeval is, want de dader heeft een brede sloot over moeten gaan. De bus stond als eye-catcher voor club Diana langs snelweg A16. “Toen ik hoorde over de brand kreeg ik een brok in mijn keel”, zegt Kuijlen.

Woensdrechtenaar Kees Kuijlen heeft al sinds de jaren tachtig een nauwe band met de bus en de eigenaars familie Siemons. “Ik heb al veel dingen meegemaakt met deze bus. We zijn naar de DDR geweest en hebben veel evenementen gedaan. Met de doorkomst van de Tour de France stonden we met de bus bij de start-finish plaats.” De bus deed lang dienst als verzorgingswagen voor wielrenners. “Vroeger deden we dat samen met Corrie en Frans, en later met de broers Ruud en Jan.”

Onderdelen voor deze bus uit 1952 vind je niet op de hoek van de straat

Om de bus op te knappen heeft Kuijlen samen met vrienden (Bas Steman en Henk Keller) een crowdfundingsactie in het leven geroepen. En de donaties stromen binnen! “Ik heb zoveel spontane reacties van mensen. We zitten in anderhalve week tijd op dik vijftienduizend euro”, zegt Kuijlen. Die twintigduizend euro komt er dus wel. Maar of dat bedrag voldoende is voor het volledige herstel van de bus? Monteur Toine Verdaasdonk betwijfeld het. “De beplating is wel te overzien. Maar het dashboard is helemaal weggesmolten. De remmen zijn weg en de motor is compleet weggebrand. De radiateur is helemaal weggesmolten. En de onderdelen voor deze bus uit 1952 vind je niet op de hoek van de straat”, zegt de Verdaasdonk.

Mensen moeten weer kunnen genieten van deze bus

Kees hoopt weer snel de weg op te kunnen met de bus. “Het is de bedoeling om met de jeugd en nieuwelingen weer koersen te gaan rijden. Jan heeft contacten om weer op sportevenementen te gaan staan. Die bus gaan we zeker weer gebruiken zodat de mensen ervan kunnen genieten.”
