De vrijeschool die Bergen op Zoom sinds anderhalf jaar rijk is, blijkt een schot in de roos te zijn. Het leerlingaantal is verdubbeld. En met die verdubbeling houden de ambities van De Zeeridder beslist niet op, blijkt uit een gesprek met directeur Tamar Chavardès.

Vanaf de eerste schooldag van 2022 heeft vrijeschool De Zeeridder honderd leerlingen. “Daar zijn we ontzettend trots op. We zijn in augustus 2020 begonnen met 47 leerlingen”, zegt Chavardès. “Ondertussen hebben we zelfs al 101 leerlingen. Het gaat hard!”

De Zeeridder heeft zijn naam te danken aan de gouden zeeridder die bovenop de toren van het Markiezenhof staat. In het kantoor van Chavardès hangt dan ook een kleurrijk kunstwerk van de zeeridder. “Bij de opening van de school hebben we dit prachtige schilderij cadeau gekregen”, zegt ze over het schilderij dat de culturele betrokkenheid van de school met de stad symboliseert.

Destijds begon de school met drie kleine klassen. De groei zorgt ervoor dat de klassen iets groter zijn, en dat er meer klassen zijn gekomen. “We hebben inmiddels twee volle kleuterklassen en daarnaast een klas 1, een combiklas 2/3 en een combiklas 4/5. Daarmee zitten we voor nu ook wel een beetje aan de max. Eén van de visiepunten is het behouden van de rust en de goede sfeer onderling. Dan moet je ook op een gegeven moment stop kunnen zeggen.”

Gemeenschapszin

De Zeeridder is de eerste en de enige vrijeschool in Bergen op Zoom. Dat is één van de redenen dat de school zo’n succes is. “Veel mensen die naar vrijeschoolonderwijs zochten, hebben dat gevonden bij ons. Daarnaast is het vrijeschoolonderwijs in Nederland überhaupt ontzettend groeiende”, zegt de directeur. “Er is minder prestatiedruk en de hedendaagse individualistische cultuur zorgt ervoor dat mensen op zoek zijn naar meer gemeenschap.” Die gemeenschapszin is onder meer terug te zien bij de vele vieringen die het hele jaar plaatsvinden in het bijzijn van de ouders.

De keerzijde van de groei is dat de school uit zijn jas groeit. De school zit samen met een andere basisschool in brede school Het Palet aan de Frans Halsstraat in Bergen op Zoom. Dat pand blijkt simpelweg niet groot genoeg te zijn. “We zitten nu een beetje los van elkaar qua ruimtes. Terwijl het juist van belang is om samen te zijn. De tweede kleuterklas zit noodgedwongen in een speellokaal. Maar gelukkig heeft de leerkracht er een ongelofelijk fijne plek van gemaakt waardoor de kinderen heerlijk kunnen spelen.”

Buitenspelen

De nood is aan de man en De Zeeridder is op zoek naar een goede plek. Stiekem droomt Chavardès van een eigen schoolgebouw. “Dat zou natuurlijk het allermooiste zijn. Liefst zouden we een plekje hebben aan de rand van het bos omdat we graag veel buiten spelen en werken.”

Een eigen en/of groter gebouw zou ook een andere wens in vervulling laten gaan: “We willen heel graag kinderopvang in het gebouw en wie weet zelfs een middelbare school.” De eerste oriënterende stappen zijn intussen al gezet. Het zou dan gaan om een klas zeven, vergelijkbaar met de eerste klas van het voortgezet onderwijs.
